Description
BPL1_EC indicates the person's province of birth in Ecuador. Birthplace province codes from BPL1_EC are compatible with codes from GEO1_EC.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time.
Boundary changes and confidentiality issues:
- Sucumbios was created in 1989 and Orellana was created in 1998; both units were formed from the province of Napa.
- In 2007 two new provinces were created: Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas formed from Pichincha and Santa Elena from Guayas.
- Galapagos Islands are combined with Guayas for confidentiality reasons.

If the person being interviewed was born in the rural parish or head-town of the canton where they are being enumerated, mark the box in this rural parish or head-town of the canton.
If they were born in another part of the country, record the name of the rural parish or head-town of the canton, the canton, and the province. In no case should you record the names of: neighborhoods in the same city, towns, hamlets, premises (recintos), or estates in the same rural parish.

Tips:
- Follow the order sequential of the questions.
- Remember the leaps in questions 11, 12, and 13.

- Ask, In what Province?, in what county? and in what city or rural parish?
