Description
ENUTS2 identifies the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) within Europe in which the household was enumerated. NUTS2 is the second level territorial units within countries. NUTS is a standard administrative division of the European Union, and was developed by the EU. The European Free Trade Association extends the NUTS system to several additional countries outside of the EU, and they are also incorporated into this variable.
ENUTS2 corresponds to the 2010 version of NUTS2 released by Eurostat.
The code labels include the standard code for the NUTS2 system and the name of the NUTS2 region, separated by a slash.

ENUTS2 is available for all the samples of Austria, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Switzerland. ENUTS2 is only available for the 2002 and 2011 Poland samples. The regions are consistent across samples. There are no comparability issues.
Finland, Hungary, and The Netherlands do not provide the necessary geographic detail to be included in this variable.
Larger sub-national units are available for all countries in ENUTS1, and smaller units for some countries in ENUTS3.
The geographic detail of the United Kingdom and Germany is not sufficient to integrate its areas into ENUTS2. Only Inner and Outer London can be identified (they are available in the GEO1_UK variable).
To address issues of changing geography and ENUTS codes, IPUMS has created ENUTS2_2013 as an extension to the ENUTS2 variable. All newer samples post 2010 are available in ENUTS2_2013. Listed below are ENUTS2_2013 and ENUTS2 availability.

Comparability — France [top]
The 2006 and 2011 samples include overseas regions (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyane, and La Reunion), which are not available in earlier French samples.
Comparability — Poland [top]
In 1998, Poland's previous 49 voivodships were organized into 16 voivodships with drastically different geography. To be concurrent with current NUTS geography, only the 2002 and 2011 Poland samples were included.
Comparability — Romania [top]
The 1977 sample has been harmonized using the integrated geographic variable provided by the Romanian statistical office, which enables the comparability of the 1977 and 2002 samples. However, the counties of Alba and Arad are not included in the 1977 sample. The absence of these counties involves RO12 / Centru and RO42 / Vest, respectively.
