GEOLEV2
2nd subnational geographic level, world [consistent boundaries over time]

GEOLEV2 is a 9-digit numeric variable.

GEOLEV2 codes and labels can be found here.

Codes, labels, frequencies, and information about boundary changes for each country can be found in the country specific harmonized variable e.g. GEO2_BR.

Description

GEOLEV2 indicates the second major administrative unit in which the household was enumerated. The variable incorporates the geographies for every country, to enable cross-national geographic analysis over time. Second administrative units in GEOLEV2 have been spatio-temporally harmonized to provide spatially consistent boundaries across samples in each country.

Comparability — General

The second major administrative level of geography differs between countries both terminologically and in terms of scale. The labels on the codes page indicate the country, place name, and the name of the geographic unit used for that country (state, department, province, etc.). The first three digits of GEOLEV2 give the country code (COUNTRY); the second three digits gives the higher level units within which the second units exist, and the last three digits specify the second level geographic unit within country. Leading zeros are used when the geographical unit within the country has less than three digit geographical code. Unknown geographical units in any country are assigned the highest possible code within the country.

The units in GEOLEV2 have been harmonized to account for changing boundaries and census geography. If the boundaries between two census units change from one sample year to another, units are combined to create a single unit. Combination of units may be necessary in a variety of cases: large units divide in later years, entire units or parts of units combine in new ways, or boundaries between units are changed from one census to the next.

Research on changes in country boundaries over time relies on the Administrative Divisions of Country (Statoids), detailed documentation and maps from IPUMS International partners, and ancillary information from census documentation.
