Description
MIG1_P_VE indicates the person's state of prior residence in Venezuela.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time. Where officially-defined states have populations under 20,000, they have been regionalized (combined) with neighboring states.
Boundary changes and confidentiality issues:
- Vargas was formed from a part of Federal District in 1998.
- Merida expanded by acquiring a portion of Barinas after 1990.
- Federal Dependencies is combined with Nueva Esparata in sample years 1971, 1981, and 2001 for confidentiality reasons.
The universe differs between samples. In 1971 it is limited to persons who ever moved between states, in the later years it includes persons who ever moved between localities.
Persons who previously lived in a foreign country are identified in all samples except 1981, where they appear to be coded among "unknown."
Non-respondents in 1971 are included among persons who never moved.
Venezuelan state of residence five years ago is available in MIG1_5_VE.

The person could have been living in a municipality in "another state", in which case the name of the state should be specified.
If the person claims to have been living "abroad", mark the appropriate box (3).
If the person is younger than 5 years (see question 4 to be sure) no more questions are asked. End the interview with this person. If the person is 5 years of age or older continue with question 12.
