Codes and Frequencies
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
GEO2_SL identifies the household's chiefdom/ward within Sierra Leone in 2004. Chiefdoms/wards are the second level administrative units of the country, after districts. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO2_SL can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General
Where officially-defined chiefdoms/wards have populations less than 20,000, they have been regionalized (combined) with neighboring chiefdoms/wards.
The microdata lists all units in Western -Urban separately, but due to unavailability of reliable maps of Western - urban district, the chiefdom/wards within Western - urban districts are merged together in the GIS file to create one single unit - Western - urban - Central, East, West.
