Description
GEO1ALT_MA identifies the household's region within Morocco from 1982 to 2004. Regions are the first level administrative units of the country. GEO1ALT_MA is spatially harmonized to account for political boundary changes across census years. Some detail is lost in harmonization. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO1_MA can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General
A reorganization of geography in Morocco occurred in 2014, changing the number of regions from 16 to 12. GEO1_MA reflects provinces in Morocco in 2014.
The entirety of Oued Ed-Dahab-Lagouira (IPUMS code 504001), the vast majority of Laayoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra (IPUMS code 504002), and part of Guelmim-Es Semara (IPUMS code 504003) were situated within the disputed territory of Western Sahara.
