Explore how IPUMS created this variable
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
- Harmonization table
- No supplemental programming
- Instructions for interpreting harmonization documents
Description
MIG1_1_TZ indicates the person's region of residence one year ago in Tanzania.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time.
Boundary changes:
- Manyara was formed from part of Arusha in 2002.
- Njombe was formed from part of Iringa in 2012.
- Katavi was formed from part of Rukwa in 2012.
- Geita was formed from parts of Shinyanga, Kagera, and Mwanza in 2012.
- Simiyu was formed from parts of Shinyanga and Mwanza in 2012.
The universe is different for the two samples. The universe for the 2002 sample is persons 1 years old or more living in private households, but it is persons 1 years old or more for the 2012 sample.
The 1988 Tanzania sample records region of residence ten years ago in MIG1_10_TZ
Universe
- Tanzania 2002: Persons age 1+ living in private households
- Tanzania 2012: Persons age 1+

B. Questions for all the people
This part involves all people who slept in the household the night before census day. The questions in this part are also found in the short questionnaire.
The questions in this part must be asked to every person following the order set. You must follow the flow of questions as arranged and read the question as written in the questionnaire. For more explanation, refer explanations in part 3.7 (how to ask questions).
Part "B" of the questionnaire contains the following questions:
Question 12: Where were you living in 2001?
The aim of this question is to know where people lived in the past year (August 2001). These statistics help to determine the level of migration of people from place to place in the past 12 months. Those who are under one year of age shouldn't be asked this question, instead in question 12 write and shade code "998" meaning "not involved".
Codes used are the same shown in question 11.
[Illustration for question 12 is omitted]
[Questions 1-19 were asked of all persons.]
17. Place of residence in 2011
Write and shade code of the region and district if living in the country or the country code followed by "44" if living outside Tanzania. For children aged '00" in question 5, write code '9798'.
Answers to these questions will help the nation understand the amount of people moving from one place to another. Also, these questions will enable the understanding of the amount of growth of towns/cities, and how many people have birth certificates or birth documentations
