Description
GEO2_ BR1970 identifies the household's municipality within Brazil in 1970. Municipalities are the second level administrative units of the country, after states. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO2_ BR1970 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General
Municipalities with populations less than 10,000 were regionalized (combined) with neighboring municipalities within the same state to create units with populations greater than 10,000.
The 1970 sample is missing the island of Fernando de Noronha. The island was under military authority until 1981, and has been administered by the state of Pernambuco.
