Description

REGNPH indicates the region in the Philippines in which the household was enumerated. It is the largest-scale geographic identifier available in the Philippines samples. REGNPH corresponds to the regional organization found in the 2010 census sample.

The full set of geography variables for the Philippines can be found in the IPUMS International Geography variables list. For cross-national geographic analysis on the first and second major administrative level refer to GEOLEV1 and GEOLEV2. More information on IPUMS-International geography can be found here.

Comparability — General

Click on the Source Variables tab for information on region of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.

Note that boundary changes have occurred in between these regions.

Regions in the Philippines are composed of the following provinces:

  • Region I - Ilocos Region - Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan
  • Region II - Cagayan Valley - Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino
  • Region III - Central Luzon - Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales, Aurora
  • Region IV - Southern Tagalog (IVA Calabarzon, IVB – Mimaropa) - Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon, Rizal, Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Palawan, Romblon
  • Region V- Bicol - Albay, Camrines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, Sorsogon
  • Region VI - Western Visayas - Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, Negros Occidental
  • Region VII - Central Visayas - Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental, Siquijor
  • Region VIII - Eastern Visayas - Biliran, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Northern Samar, Samar (Western), Southern Leyte
  • Region IX - Zamboanga Peninsula - Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Isabela City. Note that this region is known as Western Mindanao in some of the Labor Force Surveys from 1997 to 2003
  • Region X - Northern Mindanao - Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental
  • Region XI - Davao - Compostela Valley, Davao, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental. Note that this region is known as Southern Mindanao in some of the Labor Force Surveys from 1997 to 2003
  • Region XII - Soccsksargen - North Cotabato, Saranggani, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat. Note that this region is known as Central Mindanao in some of the Labor Force Surveys from 1997 to 2003
  • National Capital Region - Manila First District, Manila Second District, Manila Third District, Manila Fourth District
  • Cordillera Administrative Region - Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mountain Province
  • Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao - Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Cotabato City, Marawi City
  • Region XIII - Caraga - Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Dinagat Islands
  • Negros Island Region – This region is only available in 2016 forth quarter labor force survey
