Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time. Boundary changes for MIG2_5_MX are too numerous to list here, but users should be aware that there were changes over time. Where officially-defined municipalities have populations less than 20,000, they have been regionalized (combined) with neighboring provinces.
The 1995 Mexico sample is a stratified cluster design; stratified geographically by similar socio-economic characteristics. The sample weights are designed to yield proper counts at the state level, but the clustering of the underlying data may affect their representativeness at the municipality level. Because of this stratified cluster design, the 1995 Mexico sample has only a little above 650 municipalities compared to more than 2400 municipalities in 1990.
For the country of residence of international migrants, see MIGCTRY5 (Country of residence 5 years ago).
