Description

MIG2_5_EC indicates the person's canton of residence five years ago in Ecuador. Migration canton codes for MIG2_5_EC are compatible with codes for GEO2_EC.

Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.

Comparability — General

MIG2_5_EC is only available for the 1990, 2001, and 2010 censuses.

Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time. Where officially-defined cantons have populations less than 20,000, they have been regionalized (combined) with neighboring cantons.

Boundary changes for MIG2_5_EC are too numerous to list here, but users should be aware that there were changes over time.

The areas included in the disputed zones might vary from one census year to another. The 1990 and 2010 samples mention Las Golondrinas, Manga Del Cura, and El Piedrero as non-delimited zones.

For the country of residence of international migrants, see MIGCTRY5 (Country of residence 5 year ago).
