Description
GEO3_ZA2007 identifies the household's local municipality within South Africa in 2007. Local municipalities are the third level administrative units of the country, after province and district council (or district/metropolitan municipalities). A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO3_ZA2011 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General
Local municipalities with populations less than 20,000 (based on the most recent sample year) were regionalized (combined) with neighboring local municipalities within the same district/metropolitan municipalities to create units with populations greater than 20,000.
A few local municipalities in 2007 South Africa are disjointed units and cannot not be regionalized to create a single polygon.
