Description
GEO3_ML1987 identifies the household's district within Mali in 1987. Districts are the third level administrative units of the country, after regions and cercles. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO3_ML1987 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General
Districts with populations less than 20,000 (based on the most recent sample year) were regionalized (combined) with neighboring districts within the same region/cercles to create units with populations greater than 20,000.
