Description
GEO2_ZA2001 identifies the household’s district council (also known as district municipality) within South Africa in 2001. District councils are the second level administrative units of the country, after provinces. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO2_ZA2001 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site

Comparability — General
A few district councils in 2001 South Africa are not entirely contained within their higher first level geographical unit, provinces. Below is a list of district councils that are in two separate provinces:
- DC9: Francis Baard - part of Northern Cape and North west province
- City of Tshwane - part of North West and Gauteng province
- CBDC1: Kgalagadi - part of Northern Cape and North west province
- CBDC2: Metsweding - part of Gauteng and Mpumalanga province
- CBDC3: Sekhukhune - part of Mpumalanga and Limpopo province
- CBDC4: Eastern - part of Mpumalanga and Limpopo province
- CDBC8: West Rand - part of North West and Gauteng province
