GEO2_LS1996 identifies the constituency within Lesotho in 1996. Constituencies are the second level administrative units of the country, after districts. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO2_LS1996 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

A few constituencies in 1996 Lesotho are not entirely contained within their higher first level geographical unit, districts. Below is a list of constituencies that are in two separate districts:

• Boqate constituency crosses Berea and Maseru districts
• Senqunyane constituency crosses Berea, Maseru, and Thaba-Tseka districts
• Maletsunyane constituency crosses Maseru and Mohale's Hoek districts
• Hloahloeng constituency crosses Mohale's Hoek and Thaba-Tseka districts
• Thaba-Chitja constituency crosses Qacha's Nek and Thaba-Tseka districts
