Description
GEO2_IQ1997 identifies the district (qadah) within Iraq in 1997. Districts are the second level administrative units of the country, after governorates. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO2_IQ1997 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General
Districts with populations less than 20,000 (based on the most recent sample year) were regionalized (combined) with neighboring districts within the same governorate to create units with populations greater than 20,000.
Missing governorates: The 1997 sample is missing 19 districts, including the entire governorates of Dhok, Al-Sulaimaniya, and Arbil.
