GEO2_IQ identifies the household's district (qadah) within Iraq in 1997. Districts are the second level administrative units of the country, after governorates. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO2_IQ can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Where officially-defined districts have populations less than 20,000, they have been regionalized (combined) with neighboring districts.

Missing governorates: The 1997 sample is missing 19 districts, including the entire governorates of Dhok, Al-Sulaimaniya, and Arbil.
