Description

GEO2_IN1999 identifies the household's district within India in 1999. Districts are the second level administrative units of the country, after states. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO2_IN1999 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General

Note that the union territory of Pondicherry (coterminous to states in India) consists of four disjointed districts - Yanam (enclosed by the state of Andhra Pradesh), Mahe (enclosed by the state of Kerala), Pondicherry, and Karaikal (both within the state of Tamil Nadu).
