GEO2_GH is spatially harmonized to account for political boundary changes across census years. Some detail is lost in harmonization; see the comparability discussion. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO2_GH can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

The full set of geography variables for Ghana can be found in the IPUMS International Geography variables list. Comparability — General

Ghana changed from the local authorities system of administration to district assembly system in 1988. The country was demarcated into 110 districts as against the 140 local authorities in 1984. Therefore, 1984 is not spatially harmonized along with 2000 and 2010.
