Description

GEO1_GR1971 identifies the household's department within Greece in 1971. Departments are the first level administrative units of the country. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO1_GR1971 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General

Several geographical units in Greece have been combined by the National Statistical Service of Greece, which is different from the regionalization implemented on other IPUMS countries.

Departments with populations less than 20,000 (based on the most recent sample year) were regionalized (combined) with neighboring departments to create units with populations greater than 20,000.

• Aghion Oros is combined with Chalkidiki for confidentiality reasons.
