Codes and Frequencies
Description
GEO1_ES identifies the household's communities and autonomous cities within Spain in all sample years. Communities and autonomous cities are the first level administrative units of the country. GEO1_ES is spatially harmonized to account for political boundary changes across census years. Some detail is lost in harmonization; see the comparability discussion. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO1_ES can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.
The full set of geography variables for Spain can be found in the IPUMS International Geography variables list. For cross-national geographic analysis on the first and second major administrative level refer to GEOLEV1, and GEOLEV2. More information on IPUMS-International geography can be found here.
Comparability — General
Several provinces in 1981 are sampled at roughly 5 times the density of other provinces. The weight variables PERWT and WTHH adjust for the 1981 sample design. Statistics generated without using the weights will not be representative of the national population in that year.
Where officially-defined communities and autonomous cities have populations less than 20,000, they have been regionalized (combined) with neighboring communities and autonomous cities.
