Description
GEO1_EC1990 identifies the household's province within Ecuador in 1990. Provinces are the first level administrative units of the country. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO1_EC1990 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General
Provinces with populations less than 20,000 (based on the most recent sample year) were regionalized (combined) with neighboring provinces to create units with populations greater than 20,000.
- Galapagos Islands are combined with Guayas for confidentiality reasons.
- El Piedrero [disputed zone] is combined with Cañar for confidentiality reasons.
- Los Golondrinas [disputed zone] is combined with Imbabura for confidentiality reasons.
- Manga del Cura [disputed zone] is combined with Manabí for confidentiality reasons.
