Description

GEO1_DE1981 identifies the household’s state within Germany in 1981. States are the first level administrative units of the country. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO1_DE1981 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General

The 1970 and 1987 samples refer to the federal states within West Germany (Federal Republic), and the 1971 and 1981 samples refer to the states within East Germany (Democratic Republic).
