Description

GEO1_CL2017 identifies the household's province within Chile in 2017. Provinces are the first level administrative units of the country. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO1_CL2017 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General

Provinces with populations less than 20,000 (based on the most recent sample year) were regionalized (combined) with neighboring provinces to create units with populations greater than 20,000.

• Chiloe is combined with Palena.
• Parinacota is combined with Arica.
• Isla de Pascua is combined with Valparaiso.
• Capitan Prat and General Carrera are combined with Aisen.
• Tierra del Fuego and Antartica Chilena are combined with Magallanes.
