Description
GEO1_CL2002 identifies the household's province within Chile in 2002. Provinces are the first level administrative units of the country. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO1_CL2002 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General
Provinces with populations less than 20,000 (based on the most recent sample year) were regionalized (combined) with neighboring provinces to create units with populations greater than 20,000.
- Parinacota is combined with Arica.
- Isla de Pascua is combined with Valparaiso.
- Capitan Prat and General Carrera are combined with Aisen.
- Tierra del Fuego and Antartica Chilena are combined with Magallanes.
