GEO1_ BR1960 identifies the household's state within Brazil in 1960. States are the first level administrative units of the country. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO1_ BR1960 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General

  • The island of Fernando de Noronha was under military authority until 1981, and has been administered by the state of Pernambuco. Due to confidentiality issues, it was merged with Pernambuco in the 1960 sample.
  • Serra dos Aimorés is separately identified in the 1960 sample. It was in litigation between two states in the 1950s and 1960s, and became part of the state of Minas Gerais in 1970.
  • Guanabara is separately identified in the 1960 sample. It was a city-state that existed from 1960 to 1975 and merged with the state of Rio de Janeiro in 1975.

Missing states: The 1960 sample is missing 11 states, including the entire North region. These states are:
