Description
GEO1_BF identifies the household's region within Burkina Faso from 1996 to present. Regions are the first level administrative units of the country. GEO1_BF is spatially harmonized to account for political boundary changes across census years. Some detail is lost in harmonization; see the comparability discussion. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO1_BF can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.
The full set of geography variables for Burkina Faso can be found in the IPUMS International Geography variables list. For cross-national geographic analysis on the first and second major administrative level refer to GEOLEV1, and GEOLEV2. More information on IPUMS-International geography can be found here.
Comparability — General
Regions in Burkina Faso are not available for the 1985 sample because an entirely different organization of geography was used at the time. In the 1985 sample the primary administrative level was organized into thirty provinces, but after 1985, the primary administrative level of Burkina Faso was completely reorganized into thirteen regions. This change in geographic organization makes integration between the 1985 sample and the later samples difficult.
There are no comparability issues between the 1996 and 2006 samples.
