[9] Age at first marriage _ _
62. Column 9: Age at first marriage
This question should be asked for other than never married persons. Age at first marriage of a person in completed years is the age at the time the person got married for the first time of his/her lifetime. This question should be asked only if the marital status of the person is "married or widowed or divorced or separated ". For person never married, put dash (-) in this column.
9. Age at first marriage _ _
You have to collect information in part 2 for all persons mentioned in statement 1.1 and statement 1.2 of part 1. Some of the following questions have been answered in part 1. Therefore there will be no need to ask these questions again. In such cases all you have to do is to copy the information in the appropriate column.
61. Column 8: marital status
Codes are provided in the column heading itself. You have to ask this delicate question carefully and record appropriate code numbers according to the answers given. Record code 1 for Never Married i.e. for those who have never entered into any form of marital union. Record code 2 for Married, 3 for widowed, 4 for divorced and 5 for separated.
61.1. The category "Married" will include those persons who are contractually married but not yet living as a man and wife. Even if a marriage is disputed in the neighborhood write code 2 if the person concerned says he or she is married and is in stable de facto union. The category separated will include both legal and de facto separations. Persons who were widowed or divorced but have remarried must be recorded as married.

38. What were the month and year of your first marriage?
_ _ Month
_ _ Year
R17 through R24 apply to persons who are 15 years or older.
R24. Date of first marriage
It asks about the year and month of a person's first marriage. Those who chose 2 to 5 in R23 should answer this question.
Questions 25 and 26 are only for women
26. Total duration of marriage
___ Year of first marriage
The question should be answered by every married, widowed or divorced person by a four digit number. The answer "Never married 90" can be marked only for males and females who have never lived in a legal marriage. The year of the first marriage should be marked even in case a person has had several marriages.
E4. Age at first marriage
How old were you at the time of this marriage?
Column (8) Age at first marriage
Age at marriage (the first marriage for those married more than once). Make sure to calculate the age by considering the month and year of birth/current age and the month and year of first marriage.
For example: The respondent was born in 1952, so she is now 23 years old. The year she was married (first marriage) was 1969, so her age when she first married should be 17 years old. Suppose the respondent answers 19 year as the age she first married; this is not correct so all of the information about age and birth must be checked and corrected until everything agrees. If it happened like this, then the respondent must be asked again her age, year of her marriage (first), and her age when she married (first marriage).
44. Age at first marriage
40. Age at first marriage
Question 40: Age at first marriage
Ask the mother's age at her first marriage.
If the month and year of the first marriage is known, calculate the age at first marriage by connecting the month and year of her first marriage with the month and year at the current marriage. Similar with the age calculation, the age at first marriage is rounded down. Write down this age in the appropriate space.
Example:
Someone was born in January 1939. He/she married for the first time in May 1964. Then the age at first marriage is 25 years (although in fact it is 25 years and 4 months).
704. How old was [the respondent] when you first married?
Question 704: Age when first married
Ask the age of the respondent at the first marriage. If the month and year of the first marriage is known, count the age when first married by relating the month and year of the first marriage with the month and year of birth.
As in the calculation of age, the age when married for the first time is rounded downwards. Write the age in the provided place.
Example:
Ms. Maryam was born on January 1939. She married for the first time in May 1964. The age when married for the first time is 25 years old (although actually it is 25 years 4 months).
703. How old were you at your first marriage?
Complete Blocks VI.A, VI.B, VI.C and VI.D for every household member and then continue the interviews with WPK household members to complete Blocks VII.A, VII.B, VII.C, VII.D and VII.E.

7.8 Block VII. Ever-married women age 10 or older
The questions in this block are asked only to women who have ever been married (Q 405, codes 2, 3, or 4) and are age 10 or older (Q 404 ? 10).
Question 703: Age at first marriage
Ask the respondent her age at the time of her first marriage. If the month and year of her first marriage are known, estimate the age at first marriage by relating the month and year for first marriage to the month and year of her birth. As in the case of estimating age, age at first marriage is rounded down. Write the age in the space provided. Minimum age at first marriage is 10 years.
[p. 126]
Example:
Mrs. Mirna was born in January 1939. She married for the first time in May 1964. Then her age at first marriage was 25 (although in fact it was 25 years and 4 months).
Note:
Women who are pregnant outside of marriage are considered divorced (Q405 = 3); then Q703 should be filled in with the age at the time of enumeration minus the number of months of the pregnancy. If she has given birth, Q703 is filled in by calculating her age at the birth of her first child minus 9 months.

7. Age at first marriage

P29. How old was [the respondent] when he/she first got married? _ _
P29. Age at first marriage
Ask the age in completed years at first marriage for all respondents who ever married (consensually married, divorced/separated or widowed).
Write the age in completed years in the boxes provided and shade the digits as appropriate.
If there is some difficulty in recalling the age, ask for the date (that is, year) at which that person first got married or lived with a partner. Then, age at first marriage can be obtained by subtracting date of birth (DOB) from date at first marriage (DFM).
If the respondent cannot remember, try to find out roughly how many years that person has been married, and if she/he is still in the first marriage, deduct the number of years in marriage from 2008 to reach the year of marriage.
[Questions 41-42 were asked of those who were ever married.]
42. How old were you when you first got married? _ _
Question 42
This question tries to obtain the age in completed years at the time when a person got married for the first time. The question is also to be asked of all ever married persons.
There may be some recall problems for older persons. An attempt should be made to obtain 'Age at first marriage' as correctly as possible. If answers such as "13 or 14" are given, or where an answer could not be given for older persons, refresh their memories by asking for 'Age at which they had their first child' or even 'Years of marriage'. If the event happened during a year in which a notable event happened, this may help in getting a more exact age.
For this question, it will be a good idea if the instructions to the question on 'Age' of a person be followed, and the calendar of important events used.
For persons not single in column 12:
13 Age at first marriage ____
The census form can contain information for up to 10 persons. If there are more than ten persons, continue on a new form which can be obtained from the Census enumerator. Please note that nothing should be written in the shaded boxes [][]: they are reserved for inserting codes.
[Next page]
After completing the form, have it ready so that the enumerator can collect it on Monday 2 July 1990 or soon after. If you are not sure how to complete any of the entries, please ask the enumerator to help you when he or she calls. He or she will also check your answers and ask any questions necessary to complete the form and correct inaccurate entries.
Column 13
Age at first marriage
For every person, male or female, who is not single in column 12, write the age, in completed years. at which he or she got married for the first time. Marriage includes civil and religious marriage as well as free union. For example, if a person started living in a free union at the age of 25 years, got civilly married at the age of 28 years 5 months, and then married religiously at the age of 28 years 7 months, write 25 years.
[Next page]
Similarly, if a person first married at the age of 20 years, obtained a divorce at 30 years, and then married again two years later, write 20 years.
For persons not single in column 12:
[Columns 13 to 15]
13. Age at first marriage _ _
[Columns 13 to 15 are for persons reported as not single in column 12]
Column 13 - Age at first marriage
For every person, male or female, who is not single in column 12, write the age, in completed years, at which he or she got married for the first time. Marriage includes civil and religious marriage as well as free union.
For example, if a person started living in a free union at the age of 25 years, got civilly married at the age of 28 years, and then married religiously at the age of 29 years, write 25 years.
Similarly, if a person first married at the age of 20 years, obtained a divorce at 30 years, and then married again two years later, write 20 years.
[Questions P14 through P16 were asked of persons who were not single at P13]
P14. Age at first marriage _ _
P14, P15 and P16 - Age at first marriage, whether married more than once and number of children ever born
Answers to these questions provide data on marriage and fertility patterns. They are used to calculate measures of fertility, including average number of children born to women and childlessness.
8. How to fill in the Population Census Questionnaire
[P14, P15 and P16 are for persons not reported as single in P13]
P14 - Age at first marriage
[figure omitted]
This question is applicable for every person, male or female, who is not single at P13. In this case, write the age, in completed years, at which he/she got married for the first time. Marriage includes civil and religious marriage as well as free union.
For example, if a person started living in a free union at the age of 25 years, got civilly married at the age of 28 years, and then married religiously at the age of 29 years, write "25" years.
Similarly, if a person first married at the age of 20 years, obtained a divorce at 30 years, and then married again two years later, write "20" years as follows:
Age at the first union
6.3 How old was (Name) when married or lived in free union (for the first time)?
6.3 Age at the first union
This question has as its objective to know the age at which people formed a union or married for the first time, given that it marks an important change in the life of individuals in demographic, economic and social terms.
[p. 116]
The age at the first union is understood to be the number of completed years that a person has when married (religious or civilly) or formed a union for the first time.
Write down the declared age in the corresponding space.
[graphic of the question from the census form]
It is necessary to keep in mind the following considerations:
If the answer in 6.1 is any code from 1 to 5 and only has had one union, this question is asked without including the final phrase in parenthesis (for the first time).
Keep in mind the answers of 6.1 and 6.2 to adapt the sentence "married or formed a union." For example:
Case 1
If the civil state is free union and only has had one union (6.2 = 1), ask:
"How old was (Name) when a union was formed?"
Case 2
If the civil state is married or divorced and only has had one union (6.2 = 1), ask:
[p. 117]
"How old was (Name) when married?
In the rest of the cases, ask the complete question.
When an informant responds that this age is not know, ask to relate it with some event that took place around this date.
For example, ask in what year did the first union occur and revise the current age. If someone is 30 years old and their first union was in 1988, subtract this from the current year (1995) which gives the result of 7; and the current age (30) subtracting 7, is 23, that is, the age of the first union.
If after trying to get an answer by many means and not getting it, as a last recourse write down 99, "does not know."
Once the question is asked, if a person is married or united and only had one union, go to question 7.1, therefore leave 6.4 blank.
12. What was ____ age at first marriage?
(Completed age at the time of the first marriage must be given)
____
[8] What was the age at first marriage of [the respondent]?
Column 8: what is the age at the first marriage of [the respondent]?
(All person aged 10 years or above and persons already married once)
At the time of enumeration, this question should be asked to persons at the age of marriage. Ask persons about their age at the time of their first marriage and write the completed years.
Married means all persons currently married (single marriage, multiple marriage, and remarriage) or persons who are widow/widower, divorced, and separated. All these marital statuses are the status of having married once. If the person enumerated has already married once, ask his/her age at the time of the marriage. While writing the age at the first marriage of the male or female already married once, write the age in completed years at the time of marriage. If any person has married more than once, write the age at the first marriage. Do not write the age for their second or third marriage.
[p. 54]
If any person is unable to say his/her age at first marriage, the age can be written by asking his/her present age and how long he/she has been married and deducting the age difference. E.g. the present age of a person is 45 years and he has been married for 25 years. Then his or her age at the first marriage comes to be 20 years. Similarly, the age at the first child born and the age difference of husband and wife can also be used to be clear about their first marriage.

P35. What was [respondent]'s age at first marriage?
Fertility indicators.
For all females 15 to 49 years old.
[Questions 24 through 27 were asked of females 15 to 49 years old]
P27. What is [the respondent]'s age at first marriage?
P27-Age at First Marriage
Age at first marriage gives information on the woman's entry into first marital union, which exposes her to higher chance of childbearing. Age at first marriage is associated with fertility of women. Women who marry at younger age are more likely to have more children than women who marry at later age.
Ask the respondent the question in P27: "What was [the respondent's] age at first marriage?" only for ever-married females aged 15 to 49 years, that is, those with entries of code "2" (married), "3" (widowed), "4" (divorced/separated), or "5" (common-law/live-in) in P7-Marital Status.
Explain to the respondent that marriage includes either a legal or consensual union (where the man and the woman decide to live together without the benefit of clergy or civil ceremony).
Age at first marriage is the age at which the woman first entered married life or a consensual
union. In a legal marriage, report the age of the woman when the marriage was solemnized. In cases wherein the spouses lived together before a legal marriage, the age to be reported should be the age of the woman when she began to live together with her spouse. In a consensual marriage, it is the age of the woman when she and the man began to live together as husband and wife.

42
Marriage
42. This question is meant for all men and women who have ever been married (including those currently in marriage). If the person has been recorded as married, separated, divorced or widowed in P - 24, ask him/her about his/her age at his/her very first, marriage. Quite a number of people find it difficult to remember their age at first marriage. You have to probe before you can get the correct response. One of the ways to go about it is by getting the age of the first-born of the respondent, in his/her first marriage. Find out the time lapse between the respondent's first marriage and when this child was born. If it took just a few months, then the age at first marriage of this respondent will be just the difference between the age of the respondent and his/her first-born. If it took some time before the first child was born, then age at first marriage will be the same difference minus the duration between the date of the respondent's first marriage and the date of birth of the first-born. However, if the respondent remembers the date of the first marriage, then you just work out the number of years that have passed since this date and subtract this from the respondents' age now. Enter the age in the boxes provided.
[Examples are omitted here.]
Note: If it is a male you have been interviewing go to the next person or to Mortality Section.
