AGEMARR indicates the person's age at first marriage or consensual union.
Comparability — Index
Comparability — General
The universe varies substantially across samples. Many samples limit the responses to females, and some asked only persons who were currently in their first marriage or union. The responses in many samples are top-coded; see the codes page and country-specific comparability notes.
The data for Argentina, Spain, Greece, Romania, and Iraq are calculated by subtracting duration for marriage from age of the person. Similarly, the data from Hungary are recodes of year of first marriage. Depending on the month the census was taken, the data for these samples therefore under- or over-estimate AGEMARR slightly. Year of marriage for these and other samples is available in MARRYR and MARRYR2.
The following samples explicitly include non-marital consensual unions in this variable: Argentina, Brazil, Malawi, Mauritius, Mexico, Philippines, Rwanda, and Saint Lucia.
Age is bottom-coded at 10 years for all samples.
Some samples have different but related information on the duration of current marriage or union DURMARR.
Comparability — Argentina [top]
The data indicate age at first union and are only available for persons currently in their first union. The data are calculated from year of union.
Comparability — Brazil [top]
The data indicate age at first union, including non-marital consensual unions.
Comparability — Cambodia [top]
The census question refers to marriage or consensual union.
In the 2004 sample, the data are bottom-coded at 14 or less years and top-coded at 43. The 2013 sample bottom-coded the data at 12 years old and top-coded at 46. The 2019 sample is top coded at 65 years old.
Comparability — Canada [top]
For the 1981 sample, ages over 34 are grouped into intervals, with a top-code of 50 years. The data are coded to the mid-points of the intervals.
Comparability — China [top]
The data are top-coded at 86 or more years.
Comparability — Greece [top]
The data are calculated from year of first marriage and are available only for women.
Comparability — Indonesia [top]
The data are available only for women. This information is not available for the 1971, 1985, 2000, and 2010 samples.
Comparability — Iraq [top]
The 1980 data are restricted to females only; the 1990 data are for men and women. The data for both samples are calculated from year of first marriage.
Comparability — Lesotho [top]
The data are top-coded at 49 or more years.
Comparability — Malawi [top]
In 2008 the data indicates age at first union or marriage. In 2018 the data indicates age at first marriage, top-coded at 70 or more years.
Comparability — Mauritius [top]
The 1990 and 2000 sample are both top-coded at 48 or more years, while the 2011 sample is top-coded at 51 or more years. The age at first marriage is reported for ever married persons or those in a union.
Comparability — Mexico [top]
The data indicate age at first union.
Comparability — Nepal [top]
The census question refers to marriage or consensual union. In the 2011 sample, the data are top-coded at 55.
Comparability — Pakistan [top]
The original data include values as low as 1 year of age, available in the unharmonized source variable. The data are available only for women.
Comparability — Palestine [top]
The 1997 and 2017 sample are top-coded at 46 and 49 or more years, respectively, and indicate the age at first marriage.
Comparability — Philippines [top]
The data indicate age at first union and are available only for women age 15 to 49.
Comparability — Romania [top]
The data for the 1992 and 2002 samples are calculated from year of first marriage and are available only for women currently in their first marriage. In 2011, the census question asked about the age at first marriage to married females only.
The data are bottom-coded at 12 and top-coded at 64 in 2002; while there is a top-code at 65 or more years in 2011.

The data are bottom-coded at 12 or less years and top-coded at 55 or more years. The census question refers to marriage or consensual union.
