Description
MIG1_10_PH indicates the person's province of residence 10 year ago within the Philippines.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
See MIG1_P_PH and MIG1_5_PH for province of previous residence at other time intervals in the past.
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time. Where officially-defined provinces have populations under 20,000, they have been regionalized (combined) with neighboring provinces.
- Batanes is combined with Cagayan for confidentiality reasons.
- The province of Compostela Valley split from Davao (Davao Del Norte) in 1998.
- The province of Guimaras split from Iloilo in 1992.
- The province of Biliran split from Leyte in 1992
- The province of Sarangani split from South Cotabato in 1992.
- The province of Kalinga-Apayao split into separate Kalinga and Apayao provinces in 1995.
- Isabela city was created from the province of Basilan in 2001.
- Zamboanga-Sibugay province split from Zamboanga del Sur in 2001.
- Surigao del Norte split to form the Dinagat Islands in 2006.
- The chartered cities of Cotabato and Marawi physically lie within the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao, but are considered a part of the Central Mindanao province for administrative purposes. As a result, Catabato and Marawi are combined with the Lanao Del Sur and Maguindanao provinces.
Spratly Islands are a group of disputed islands claimed by Malaysia, Taiwan, China, Philippines, Vietnam, and Brunei. The 1995 to 2010 Philippines samples include data on Spratly Islands (locally known as "Kalayaan Group of Islands") as part of the Palawan province.

The question on residence 10 years ago pertains to the place where a person was residing 10 years ago. Data on this are collected to fill the missing information on migration between 1990 and 1995.
Ask the question in P24: "In what city/municipality did ______ reside on May 1, 1990?". Enter code 0008 in P24 if the person's residence 10 years ago is the same as his present residence. However, if his residence 10 years ago was in another city/municipality, write the name of the city/municipality and province on the space provided.
For those whose residence 10 years ago was in a foreign country, enter code 0007 in the code box.
If the respondent does not know the residence of the members of the household 10 years ago, ask the person himself about his residence 10 years ago. However, if the person cannot recall the name of the city/municipality and province where he lived 10 years ago after exhaustive probing, enter code 0009 for unknown in the code box.
Complete names of provinces should be written when provinces like llocos, Negros, Davao and Bicol were provided. Ask the respondents whether, they mean llocos Norte or llocos Sur, Negros Oriental or Occidental, Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte or Davao Oriental and what particular province in the Bicol Region.
In cases where the respondent knows only the province where the member resided ten years ago, enter appropriate code of the province in the first two code boxes and code 99 for the last two boxes.
