Description

GEO2_TR identifies the household's district within Turkey in all sample years. Districts are the second level administrative units of the country, after provinces. GEO2_TR is spatially harmonized to account for political boundary changes across census years. Some detail is lost in harmonization; see the comparability discussion. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO2_TR can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General

Tukey had more than 900 districts in 1990 and 2000 and more than 650 districts in 1985. However, there are only 255 districts available in the IPUMS International microdata in 2000. The 1990 microdata contains 205 districts and the 1985 microdata contains 167 districts. Districts were combined by the State Institute of Statistics of Turkey for confidentiality purposes. Our GIS Boundary files represent confidential zed districts provided by the State Institute of Statistics and identified in the IPUMS International microdata. Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time.

Boundary changes for GEO2_TR are too numerous to list here, but users should be aware that there were changes over time.
