Description
GEO2_EC1982 identifies the household's canton within Ecuador in 1982. Cantons are the second level administrative units of the country, after provinces. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO2_EC1982 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General
The areas included in the disputed zones might vary from one census year to another. The 1982 sample does not identify any units as disputed zones.
Cantons with populations less than 20,000 (based on the most recent sample year) were regionalized (combined) with neighboring cantons within the same provinces to create units with populations greater than 20,000.
