Description

GEO2_CN2000 identifies the household's prefecture or city within China in 2000. Prefectures or cities are the second level administrative units of the country, after provinces. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO2_CN2000 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

For cross-national geographic analysis on the first and second major administrative level of any country refer to GEOLEV1, and GEOLEV2. Comparability — General

The 2000 sample is missing 4 prefectures/cities that are coded as "Hubei Province direct administrative area." These prefectures/cities are not contiguous and are given unique identifiers in shapefiles.
These prefectures/cities are:

• Xiantao city
• Qianjiang city
• Shennongjia district
• Tianmen city
