Description
GEO2_ BR1960 identifies the household's municipality within Brazil in 1960. Municipalities are the second level administrative units of the country, after states. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO2_ BR1960 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General
- The island of Fernando de Noronha was under military authority until 1981 and had been administered by the state of Pernambuco.
- Serra dos Aimorés is separately identified in the 1960 sample. It was in dispute between Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo and was split between the two states after 1960.
- Guanabara is separately identified in the 1960 sample. It was a city-state that existed from 1960 to 1975 and merged with the state of Rio de Janeiro in 1975.
Missing states: The 1960 sample is missing 11 states and their corresponding municipalities, including the entire North region. These states are:
