Description
GEO1_CO1964 identifies the household's department within Colombia in 1964. Departments are the first level administrative units of the country. A GIS map (in shapefile format), corresponding to GEO1_CO1964 can be downloaded from the GIS Boundary files page in the IPUMS International web site.

Comparability — General
Departments with populations less than 20,000 (based on the most recent sample year) were regionalized (combined) with neighboring departments to create units with populations greater than 20,000.
- Amazonas, Guania, Vaupes, and Vichada are combined for confidentiality reasons.
- Cundinamarca is combined with Bogotá D.C. because of how the 1964 sample's departments were identified and coded.
- Although Sucre, Casanare, QuindÃo, and Risaralda are labeled by the 1964 sample as being combined with other departments, they were not formed until after the 1964 census.
