Explore how IPUMS created this variable
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
- Harmonization table
- No supplemental programming
- Instructions for interpreting harmonization documents
Description
MIG1_5_CA indicates the person's province of residence five years ago in Canada.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Where officially-defined provinces have populations under 20,000, they have been regionalized (combined) with neighboring provinces. Due to confidentiality reasons.
Missing provinces and confidentiality issues:
- Yukon and Northwest Territories combined with Prince Edward Island in 1981.
The universe in all samples includes intra-province movers -- persons who moved between census subdivisions -- but excludes persons who moved between dwellings within the same subdivision.
The variable is similar to MIG1_1_CA, which refers to province of residence one year prior to the census.
