METROCO indicates the metropolitan area in Colombia in which the household was enumerated for the 1964 - 2005 sample years. METROCO is harmonized by name and does not account for boundary changes over time.
The full set of geography variables for Colombia can be found in the IPUMS International Geography variables list. For cross-national geographic analysis on the first and second major administrative level refer to GEOLEV1 and GEOLEV2. More information on IPUMS-International geography can be found here.
Comparability — General
Metropolitan areas are comparable across Colombian samples. Their composition is identical for all samples years. Because the composition of metropolitan areas is determined from 1993 population counts, in earlier years the metropolitan areas included some municipalities that would not meet the metropolitan criteria.
