Codes and Frequencies
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
EDUCCO indicates the person's educational attainment in Columbia in terms of the level of schooling completed and the number of years completed at that level.
Comparability — General
The principal comparability issue is the treatment of college and university level education in 2005. That sample breaks tertiary study into various tracks that were not differentiated in earlier samples.
In 2005, teacher's training consisted of a four year branch which begins in the fifth year of secondary education and extends two years beyond it. Hence, we have included the first two years as part of the last two grades of secondary and coded years three and four as Teaching School.
All samples do not provide number of years of schooling at higher levels of education.
Secondary education is typically 6 years in duration, or 7 years if taken during the night.
A harmonized international classification of educational attainment is available in EDATTAIN, which imposes a number of compromises to regularize the data across countries. In contrast, EDUCCO retains the full detail on educational attainment from the Colombian samples.
The number of years of schooling completed is available separately in YRSCHOOL.
