Description

EBPLNT3 indicates the NUTS3 region of Europe in which the person was born. The Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) is a standard administrative division of the European Union, and was developed by the EU. NUTS3 identifies small territorial units: the third level within countries.

EBPLNT3 only identifies regions within the person's country of residence; it does not identify birthplaces of international migrants.

The code labels include the standard code for the NUTS3 system and the name of the NUTS3 region, separated by a slash.

Comparability — General

EBPLNT3 is available for all the samples of Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Spain; and certain samples for Ireland, Greece, Switzerland, and Turkey.

Larger sub-national units for birthplace are available in EBPLNT1 and EBPLNT2.

Comparability — Ireland [top]

The variable is comparable across the Ireland samples apart from a minor universe difference.

Comparability — Romania [top]

The variable is comparable across Romanian samples aside from boundary changes that may have occurred. In 1977, the counties of Calarasi and Giurgiu were not yet seperated from Ialomita and Ilfov. Thus, those NUTS3 units of birth are not fully comparable between 1977 and the most recent samples.

Comparability — Spain [top]

In 1991, persons born in Ceuta, Melilla and other Spanish territories are reported in a single category (integrated as ES630 / Ceuta + ES640 / Melilla + Other Spanish territories). In the other samples, Ceuta and Melilla are reported separately for all persons, and other territories are not identified.

Comparability — Switzerland [top]

The cantons of Inner Rhodes and Outer Rhodes are combined for confidentiality purposes.
