Description

EBPLNT1 indicates the NUTS1 region in which the person was born. The Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) is a standard administrative division of the European Union, and was developed by the EU. The European Free Trade Association extends the NUTS system to several additional countries outside of the EU, and they are also incorporated into this variable. NUTS1 identifies the largest territorial units within countries.

EBPLNT1 only identifies regions within the person's country of residence; it does not identify birthplaces of international migrants.

The code labels include the standard code for the NUTS1 system and the name of the NUTS1 region, separated by a slash.

Comparability — General

EBPLNT1 is available for all the samples of Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, and Switzerland; and certain samples for France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland and Turkey.

The variable is generally comparable across samples, apart from specific boundary changes regarding Ceuta, Melilla and other Spanish territories in Spain and the identification of the overseas territory in the most recent French samples.

Smaller sub-national units for birthplace are available for many countries in EBPLNT2 and EBPLNT3.

Comparability — France [top]

The 1999 sample identifies Overseas Departments. For comparability with other samples, these are coded to "foreign country."

This variable is not available in the 2006 and 2011 samples. An unharmonized source variable provides birthplaces for persons in overseas departments in 2006 and 2011.

Comparability — Ireland [top]

The variable is comparable across Ireland samples except the universe for the 2002, 2006, and 2011 samples, in which the question was asked only of non-absent persons on the census day.

Comparability — Romania [top]

Although the counties of Calarasi and Giurgi did not exist in the 1977 sample, the place of birth at the NUTS1 level is fully comparable across samples.

Comparability — Spain [top]

In 1991, persons born in Ceuta, Melilla and other Spanish territories are reported in a single category (integrated as ES6 / Sur + Other Spanish territories). In the other samples, Ceuta and Melilla are reported separately for all persons, and other territories are not identified.
