Explore how IPUMS created this variable
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
- Harmonization table
- No supplemental programming
- Instructions for interpreting harmonization documents
Description
BPL2_KE indicates the person's district of birth within Kenya. Birthplace district codes from BPL2_KE are compatible with codes from GEO2_KE.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time. Boundary changes for BPL2_KE are too numerous to list here, but users should be aware that there were changes over time.
Kenya passed a new constitution in 2010 which nullified all geography changes that occurred after 1992. As a result, the former Provinces were abolished, and the former second level administrative units, formerly Districts, were elevated to the new first level administrative units and renamed Counties. The 47 districts present in 1992, with the same boundaries present at that point, now represent the 47 counties that make up the first geographic level. Despite the counties now holding the first administrative role, counties are used as the level of geography identified in BPL2_KE to preserve comparability between samples.
In the 1989 census this question was only asked of non-visitors and long-form respondents. In all other censuses, the universe is all persons.
For international migrants' country of birth, see BPLCOUNTRY.
