Description

FAMSIZE counts the number of the person's own family members living in the household with her/him, including the person her/himself. These include all persons related to the person by blood, adoption, or marriage as indicated by the census forms or inferred from them.

FAMSIZE is calculated from the units identified in the IPUMS constructed variable FAMUNIT (family unit membership). The primary family is defined as all persons related to the head in the RELATE variable. Secondary families are individuals or groups of persons linked together by the IPUMS constructed pointer variables SPLOC, MOMLOC, and POPLOC (location of spouse, mother, and father).

This variable is comparable across all samples, although there is variation in the specific information used to make the underlying mother, father, and spouse links.

No constructed family interrelationship variables are available for the individual-level samples that do not contain entire households of persons.

Comparability — United Kingdom [top]

Scotland 1861 has a high proportion of missing values for RELATE (relationship to head of household variable). As a result, there may be inaccuracies in FAMUNIT and other constructed household and family interrelationship variables for dwellings containing records with missing values for RELATE.

Comparability — United States [top]

The comparability of this variable is affected by the information available on family relationships. FAMUNIT is based on the information contained in RELATE (relationship to household head), MOMLOC, POPLOC, and SPLOC, for all years except 1850-1870. In these years, relationships to the household head are imputed and FAMUNIT is based on imputed family relationships. For more information, see the IPUMS-USA user guide.
