FAMUNIT is a 4-digit numeric variable.
If there is only one group of related individuals within the household, all of them will be coded "1;" if there is a second, separate such group listed on the form, all of them will be coded "2," and so on.

Description
FAMUNIT is a constructed variable indicating to which family within the household a person belongs.
All persons related to the household head receive a 1 (see RELATE). Each secondary family or secondary individual receives a higher code. For purposes of FAMUNIT, secondary families are individuals or groups of persons linked together by the IPUMS constructed pointer variables SPLOC, MOMLOC, and POPLOC (location of spouse, mother, and father).
Comparability — General
This variable is comparable across all samples, although there is variation in the specific information used to make the underlying mother, father, and spouse links.
FAMUNIT is distinct from SUBFNUM, which in some samples identifies subfamily membership both within and outside of the primary family.
No constructed family interrelationship variables are available for the individual-level samples that do not contain entire households of persons.
Family interrelationship variables were constructed using different algorithms in historical samples than those used for modern samples. In pre-1950 samples, surnames are often available and help determine relationships. The historical samples also rely more on record order when there is uncertainty determining the relationship.
