Explore how IPUMS created this variable
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
- Harmonization table
- No supplemental programming
- Instructions for interpreting harmonization documents
Description
MIG2_P_EG indicates the person's district of previous residence in Egypt. Migration province codes from MIG2_P_EG are compatible with codes from GEO2_EG. Migration could have occurred at any time in the past.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time. Where officially defined districts have populations less than 20,000, they have been regionalized (combined) with neighboring districts.
Boundary changes for MIG2_P_EG are too numerous to list here, but users should be aware that there were changes over time.
Missing geography:
The 1986 sample is missing Luxor governorate and its corresponding districts. Some districts in other governorates are missing. Check the codes tab for details.
Some available districts are missing villages. Weights in districts with minimal missing population were adjusted to reflect district totals. Districts missing significant portions of the population are listed below with their coverage rates.

This question was asked of all persons in the 1986 and 1996 census, but only residents in the 2006 census.
In the 1986 sample, a higher proportion of persons (relative to 1996 and 2006) declared as place of previous residence the same district where the household was located at the time of the census. In order to identify these cases, users could compare district of previous residence to the district where the household is located (refer to GEO2_EG).
