Codes and Frequencies
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
MIG2_5_SL indicates the person's chiefdom of residence 5 years ago within Sierra Leone. Chiefdom codes from MIG2_5_SL are compatible with codes from GEO2_SL.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Although MIG2_5_SL is only available for the 2015 sample, users should be aware that MIG2_5_SL are comparable with codes from GEO2_SL.
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time. Boundary changes for MIG2_5_SL are too numerous to list here, but users should be aware that there were changes over time.
Chiefdoms with populations less than 20,000 (based on the most recent sample year) were regionalized (combined) with neighboring units within the same district to create units with populations greater than 20,000.
