Codes and Frequencies
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
MIG2_14_SL indicates the person's chiefdom of residence in 1990 within Sierra Leone. Chiefdom codes for MIG2_14_SL are compatible with codes for GEO2_SL. The variable also includes information on foreign country of residence in 1990 for international migrants.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
MIG2_14_SL is only available for the 2004 sample.
Where boundaries changed over time, units were harmonized to create units with boundaries that remain stable over time. Boundary changes for MIG2_14_SL are too numerous to list here, but users should be aware that there were changes over time.
Chiefdoms with populations less than 20,000 (based on the most recent sample year) were regionalized (combined) with neighboring units within the same district to create units with populations greater than 20,000.
