Description
MIG1ALT_5_CL indicates the province within Chile in which the person lived five years prior to the census. The 1970 sample is coded into the pre-1974 geographic system of provinces.
See MIG1_5_CL for a comparable variable using the modern province classification for the 1982-2002 samples. See also MIG1ALT_P_CL for a similar variable for 1960 on province of previous residence using the pre-1974 geographic classification.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
In 1974, the Chilean government decentralized the administrative regions of its country, and many larger provinces were broke up into smaller size provinces. In addition, some municipalities were created, disappeared, or changed boundaries. See GEO1ALT_CL for a discussion of these changes.
