Explore how IPUMS created this variable
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
- Harmonization table
- No supplemental programming
- Instructions for interpreting harmonization documents
Description
BPL1ALT_CL indicates the province within Chile in which the person was born. The 1960 and 1970 samples are coded into the pre-1974 geographic system of provinces GEO1ALT_CL.
See BPL1_CL for a comparable variable using the modern province classification for the 1982-2002 samples.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
In 1974, the Chilean government decentralized the administrative regions of its country, and many larger provinces were broken up into smaller size provinces. In addition, some municipalities were created, disappeared, or changed boundaries. See GEO1ALT_CL for a discussion of these changes.
For the country of birth of international migrants, see BPLCOUNTRY (Country of birth).
