Description
AGE gives age in years as of the person's last birthday prior to or on the day of enumeration.
Comparability — Index
Comparability — General
AGE is fully comparable for most samples, but there are exceptions.
NOTE: Some census samples only provide ages grouped into intervals: Finland, Ireland (1971-2006, 2016), Israel (1972, 1983, 1995), Italy, 2014 Morocco, Netherlands, Palestine, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, and 2001 United Kingdom.
In AGE, the data are coded to the mid-points of the intervals (rounding down). These samples will be of limited use for some types of analyses. The original intervals are documented in the labels for the parallel variables AGE2 and AGE3.
There is rounding (or "digit preference") in many samples on the part of the respondent to the nearest five or ten year age marker (i.e. 20, 25, 30, etc.), even if the question asks for a singular, numeric age answer. The rounding is generally most evident in developing countries and among older persons, likely due to memory issues and the lack of importance put on exact age in these countries. For these reasons, interpreting intervals and age ranges (which IPUMS reports in AGE2) may be advisable, as opposed to specific ages.
The age data for 1962 France, 1971-1991 Greece, and 1978-1988 Poland were inferred. For 1962 France, age since last birthday was inferred from an alternative age variable: age that the person would achieve in calendar year 1962. For the Greece samples, age was assigned probabilistically from separate data on month and year of birth. For the Poland samples, age was assigned through one-to-one equivalences with year of birth: persons born in the census year were assigned 0 years old and so forth, given that both census operations were carried out in December of the corresponding calendar years. This procedure effectively overestimates age by one year for persons with birthdays later in the month of December.
Most samples top-coded age responses between 85+ and 99+ years. IPUMSI top-codes every other sample at 100+. See the codes page.
Some samples provide additional age variables, such as year of birth (BIRTHYR), which is based on the calendar year.

The 1971 and 1991 sample groups ages in the 90+ age range (91 to 92, and 93 to 94). In 2001, ages between 16 and 74 are grouped into varying ranges. In AGE the data are coded to the mid-points of the intervals. Note that the intervals for prime working-age adults are particularly broad. The original intervals are preserved in the unharmonized variable UK01A400.
The 1971, 1991, and 2001 sample are top-coded at 95+ years.

The 1960-1970 samples are top-coded at 100+ years; 1980-1990 at 90+; 2005-2010 at 95+ years; 2015 at 97+ years. In 2000, the data are grouped for ages 90+, but the value assigned to the top-code is 92 or 93 base on the average age of all individuals age 90+ in their state of residence. The 2015 sample is top-coded at 97 years, and the 2020 sample at 96 years.
NOTE for AGE in 2000 sample: Users should note that Census Bureau disclosure avoidance techniques resulted in implausible sex ratios for individuals aged 65 and up in the 2000 census. As a result, PUMS files for these years may not have been representative of the 65+ population at individual ages, and analyses of variables that are expected to change by age stand to be particularly affected. For a full discussion of the problem and its implications for researchers, see NBER Working Paper No. 15703.
In November 2010, the Census Bureau released revised data for the 2000 PUMS samples. AGE reports these revised values. We have retained the original values of age in an alternate source variable, ageorig (US2000A_0423) so that users can analyze the differences in the revisions or replicate previous analyses. However, we recommend that users analyze the revised variable AGE in their research.
