Explore how IPUMS created this variable
Most IPUMS data transformations are performed using variable harmonization tables that specify how each value in the source data is recoded. Some variables also require programming logic in addition to the harmonization table. The harmonization documents for this variable are:
- Harmonization table
- No supplemental programming
- Instructions for interpreting harmonization documents
Description
MIG2_5_FJ indicates the person's province of residence 5 years ago within Fiji. Migration canton codes from MIG2_5_FJ are compatible with codes from GEO2_FJ.
Click on the Source Variables tab for information on place of residence for each sample year. Source variables may contain more geographic unit detail but are not suitable for cross-temporal comparison.
Comparability — General
Provinces with populations less than 20,000 (based on the most recent sample year) were regionalized (combined) with neighboring provinces within the same department to create units with populations greater than 20,000.
The 1976 sample reports residence 6 years ago, not 5 years: "when Fiji became independent in 1970."
Apart from the differing reference period noted above, the data are fully comparable across samples.
For the country of residence 5 years ago of international migrants, see MIGCTRY5 (Country of residence 5 years ago).
